PIZZA AT TEN

I vividly remember the summer of 1988. I had passed my exams as a professional translator two years earlier and had been working as a translator of English and American short stories for a well-known German publishing hous for a year.
Thank goodness I had plenty of freelance work, which included not only literary translations but also various other jobs. This often meant working on weekends. The first personal computers were becoming available, but I couldn't afford one. Fortunately, my good friend Wolfgang, who ran a small business consultancy, allowed me to use his PC. So, we often spent our weekends in his small office—him sipping coffee on the sofa while I busily typed away at my translation work.
Then, usually around ten o'clock, we would call it a day, wrap up our work, and go down the stairs out on to the street and into the warm summer night, and joined the many night owls wandering the cobbled streets of Saarbrücken's old town. Eventually, we would turn into a small alley and settle at a table outside a neat little pizzeria. We would order a carafe of dry red wine and a pizza each, savoring the moment as we observed the crowds passing by, enjoying the quiet harmony that connected us.
Sometimes, on warm summer nights, when the long, wistful whistling of birds touches my loneliness, my desire to spread my wings and soar, my wanderlust, I often reflect on those nights and wish I could turn back time to experience that freedom once more.
Yet, happiness cannot be tightly grasped; however, you can experience joy, a joy that can last a lifetime.

I believe in reincarnation. Life cannot simply end with death; there must be something else.

Maybe I'll be reborn as a queen or a courtesan. I carry within me the essence of all possibilities, including everything in between.
